News – Microsoft’s Speech Recognition
Addressing Carnegie Mellon University today, Bill Gates argued that in five years’ time the keyboard will have been rendered obsolete by speech-recognition technology. In the past, such claims have proved overambitious. Speaking in 1997 he said, ‘In this 10-year time frame, I believe we will have perfected speech recognition and speech output well enough that those will become a standard part of the interface.’. However, it is still difficult enough to program gadgets with voice recognition, let alone use such technology to dictate emails or enter search terms. Global Lingo never uses speech recognition or other forms of machine transcription, favouring trained writers dedicated to complete accuracy and fluency, but continues to monitor the development of these nascent technologies with interest.
