News – International Signing

A new initiative has been launched by five European states to develop an international sign language. Delegates from Sweden, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Spain and Portugal recently met at the Doncaster School and College for the Deaf to highlight the efforts. The two-day event focused on the Spread the Sign website, which was devised at the Tullängsskolan College in Orebro, Sweden. The website shows videos of signs for everyday words and phrases in six languages, designed for deaf people who want to work or travel in Europe. It is currently a pilot project supported by the European Commission’s Leonardo da Vinci language scheme, and it is hoped that further countries will contribute to the online visual dictionary.
