The Sunday Mail reports today that a policeman is being investigated regarding claims that he inaccurately translated from covert recordings of four murder suspects. The PC was asked to listen to secret tape recordings of the accused speaking in their native Turkish.
His translation suggested that the men were discussing the murder and subsequent disposal of the body in a carpet. However, the case against the four collapsed when two independent expert witnesses claimed nothing on the tapes supported the police officer’s interpretation. In fact, the men were discussing subjects including business, football, and carpets in general.
As a result of the mistaken translation, the prosecution was dropped. This highlights the dangers of using internal bilingual staff rather than experienced professionals for legal translations. Global Lingo only ever uses qualified, certified and experienced professional translators.
