On 7th February 2014 the world will be focusing on the opening ceremony of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. This will be the first time that Russia has hosted the Winter Olympics.
98 events in 15 sports will be held during the Games, with more than 2500 athletes from 94 nations participating. This means that almost all languages of the world will be spoken at the same time, in the same place, for more than two weeks.
BBC Sport recently released this trailer promoting its coverage for all 17 days of the Games. It features a voice over by English actor Charles Dance, renowned for his role of Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. Icy chills race down one’s spine at his intense voice, while confident athletes want to overpower the snowy, magnificent mountains.
‘I am the dreadful menace, the one whose will is done; the haunting chill upon your neck. I am the conundrum.
I will summon armies of wind, and rain, and snow. I made the black cloud overhead; the ice, like glass below.
Not you or any other can fathom what is nigh. I will tell you when to jump and I’ll dictate how high.
The ones that came before you stood strong, and tall, and brave, but I stole their dreams away; those dreams could not be saved.
But now you stand before me, devoid of all dismay. Could it be? Just maybe; I’ll let you have your day.’
The wild nature appears to be talking to the athletes, warning them about its unlimited powers. Their competition will definitely not be an easy one, although it will not be impossible; it will be really demanding, but not impossible.
